How to play

In short

• Type a word into the row and press Submit.
• Dark tile: the letter is in the right spot. Yellow: the letter is in the word, but somewhere else. Faded: the letter is not in the word.
• Guess the word in as few tries as you can. There is a new daily word every day.

Goal

Guess the hidden word. The daily word is the same for everyone and changes at midnight Central European Time. Some days it has 5 letters, other days 6 or 7. You get one guess more than the word has letters, so 6, 7 or 8.

How to guess

1. Type a word with the same number of letters, on the on-screen keyboard or on your computer keyboard.
2. Press Submit or Enter. Each guess must be a word from the dictionary and can be in any form, for example apples or walked. A word the dictionary does not know, or one you already tried, does not use up a guess.
3. Each letter of your guess shows how it fits:
   • solid dark tile with a check mark: the letter is in the right spot,
   • light yellow tile with a dashed outline and arrows: the letter is in the word, but in another spot,
   • faded tile with a cross in the corner: the letter is not in the word.
4. The keys on the on-screen keyboard are marked the same way. A key whose letter is not in the word fades and gets crossed out, so you can see at a glance which letters are left.

If you type the same letter more than once, it is marked at most as many times as it appears in the word. A letter in the right spot is marked first.

Answers

The hidden word is always a common noun in its basic form, for example apple or garden. It is spelled the same in American and British English.

Guesses are checked against a spell-checking dictionary, so both American and British spellings count, for example color and colour. Rude and offensive words are left out.

Practice word

In Practice mode you get a random word and can play as many as you like. They do not count in the statistics.

Statistics and streak

The statistics show how many daily words were played and solved, and on which guess. The streak is off by default. Turn on Count streak in the statistics to see how many days in a row the daily word was solved.
